Dutch chipmaker Axelera AI has secured more than $250 million in funding, backed by new investor BlackRock, to further develop its AI chips and software for inference. Founded in 2021, Axelera AI is one of the few European companies challenging the dominance of US chip market leader Nvidia.
The company's focus on developing chips and software for inference, the computing process of running an AI model, positions it for growth as more enterprises adopt AI. Nvidia's acquisition of assets from Groq, a key player in the inference market, last year highlights the importance of this sector. Axelera AI's chips are designed for use on edge devices, such as mobile phones and smart cameras, which is crucial for making AI more energy efficient by processing data directly on devices.
Axelera AI's CEO and co-founder, Fabrizio Del Maffeo, emphasizes the significance of sovereignty in the context of European businesses wanting to run AI systems locally, amid data security concerns and geopolitical tensions. However, he also stresses the company's ambition to be a global player, with a growing presence in North America and a footprint in India and China.
The startup has 350 enterprise customers across sectors including defense, retail, robotics, and agriculture. Sectors like defense, robotics, and cyber lend themselves to processing data locally due to privacy, security, and resilience reasons. Del Maffeo highlights the importance of local technology, particularly in the defense sector, where edge computing allows military units to operate when major communication links are jammed or cut and enables anonymous teams to coordinate maneuvers without relying on distant servers.
For everyday users, this could mean more secure and efficient AI applications on their devices. From an industry perspective, Axelera AI's growth and innovation could reshape how companies approach AI development, focusing more on local processing and less on reliance on large data centers.
The implications extend beyond the tech industry, as the adoption of local AI technology could have broader societal effects, such as enhanced data privacy and security. As Axelera AI continues to expand its operations and customer base, it's likely to play a significant role in the future of AI chip development, both in Europe and globally.
