Breaking News Sees 103% Surge in Traffic: Why Google's AI Can't Replace Human Journalism
The media world has been abuzz with concerns over the 'zero-click' future, where AI chatbots and search engines ingest content, interpret it, and summarize it for users, potentially rendering website visits obsolete. Data from analytics company Chartbeat reveals a stark reality: global publisher traffic from Google dropped by one-third last year, with smaller publications bearing the brunt.

However, a recent analysis by Define Media Group offers a glimmer of hope. While organic search traffic overall has plummeted by 42%, clicks to breaking news stories have defied expectations, surging by 103%. The primary reason for this anomaly lies in Google's approach to breaking news queries. Unlike other types of content, Google doesn't display AI Overviews for breaking news, instead opting for a Top Stories carousel. This distinction is rooted in the inherent nature of breaking news, which often involves rapidly changing and inconsistent information.

The surge in breaking news traffic can be attributed, in part, to Google Discover, the built-in news feed on most Android phones. Recent changes to Discover have further boosted news from publishers. Even when excluding Discover, web traffic to news remains relatively flat, underscoring the resilience of breaking news to AI substitution.

For news publishers, this trend presents both opportunities and challenges. While competing on breaking news can be expensive and demanding, requiring continuous monitoring and staffing, it also offers a chance to connect with readers on a deeper level. By providing context and analysis, publishers can explain why the news matters to their audience, even if that explanation is at risk of being summarized by AI.

The competition for presence in AI summaries is fierce, with sites like Reddit, LinkedIn, and Wikipedia dominating the landscape. However, data suggests that the share of the audience that clicks through to sources is more intentional, presenting an opportunity for publishers to turn them into loyal readers.

From these developments, a new strategy begins to take shape. By recognizing the value of breaking news, the importance of explanatory content, and the need to adapt to AI-driven changes in the media landscape, publishers can start to build a more sustainable future.
